Recently I’ve bought a new cookbook on amazon.com, Washoku; Recipes from the Japanese Home Kitchen.
Today I’ve finished reading the whole book and must definitely conclude: This book is more than a regular cookbook.
With every recipe you get some background information, which makes you want to read every single recipe (Which I did.. I even dreamt about Japanese supermarkets last night). Also, the “Kitchen Harmony” and “Harmony at Table” sections which some (actually a lot) recipes have, give you good knowledge on the Japanese eating culture.
I thought I knew a bit about Japanese cooking, but this book has taught me more than I would’ve ever known with the standard ‘Japanese-equals-sushi-cookbook’. Sushi is by no means the main ingredient in this book.
I absolutely love it, not just as a cookbook but also as a nice book to curl up with on the couch and learn more about the Japanese (eating) culture. A joy to read ^_^
So, recommended by me to all Japan lovers, cookbook-lovers and vegetarians: Washoku: Recipes from the Japanese Home Kitchen by Elizabeth Andoh
For vegetarians there’s even a better cookbook, I guess: Kansha: Celebrating Japan’s Vegan and Vegetarian Traditions by Elizabeth Andoh. Also looks like a great cooking/reading book, maybe I’ll buy it too
